Komitas (a.k.a. Soghomon Soghomonyan) was born on September 26 (on October 8 in the Old Calendar) 1869, in Kütahya (known also as Koutina) town, Ottoman Empire. Komitas’s ancestors migrated to Kütahya from Goghtn Province of Historical Armenia at the turn of the 17th century. His father, Gevorg Soghomonyan, and his mother, Taguhi Hovhannisyan, had delightful voices gifted by nature. The songs composed by them were loved in the musical life of Kütahya. Komitas’s mother passed away in 1870, and his father passed away in 1880. The paternal grandmother took care of the orphaned child and, after her death, the aunt looked after him. In 1876 – 1880, Komitas entered the 4 year Elementary School of Kütahya and then he continued his education at the college of Broosa, a city not far from Kütahya. In 1881, Gevorg Vartapet Derdzakyan, who was the local prelate of Kütahya, took his way to the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin, the spiritual centre of Armenia, to be ordained bishop. Following the pontifical encyclical of Gevorg the IV, the Catholicos of All Armenians, Gevorg Vardapet had to bring an orphan boy with delightful voice to Etchmiadzin to get enrolled at the Gevorgian Seminary. 11 year old Soghomon was selected out of the other 20 orphans.

The Statue to Davit of Sassoun in Yerevan -

The sculptor of the statue is Yervand Kochar. The statue was erected in 1959. It is in the square just outside the railway station. During the Soviet times, most of the tourists visited Armenia by train, and the first thing that the tourists were attracted by was the statue to Davit of Sassoun. It is magnificent: a giant horseman with huge muscles, a severe look holding a huge sword in the way one holds a big broom or a scythe. The horseman doesn’t seem to be going to kill one man. He seems to be going to sweep away a huge amount of rubbish with a huge broom or mow ripe hay with a huge scythe. The horseman is Davit of Sassoun, the Armenian epic hero who according to the Armenian epic Daredevils of Sassoun, drove Arab invaders out of Armenia. There is a bowl on the rock with water flowing out of it. Yervand Kochar’s idea was to show that Armenians are very patient to an extent but when the bowl of patience is full, Armenians can rebel. And the scythe-like sword is also symbolic denoting that Armenians are not killers, they only sweep away the intruders. This is a genius piece of work.

The most beautiful thing

Love, faith, family, friends, estate… the most beautiful thing is different for different people. For me, the most beautiful thing is love. Love towards my family, friends and others. In that video, the most beautiful thing is love between a boy and a girl. The girl was deaf and dumb, and the boy was very shy. I must say that they felt the most beautiful thing without any words. And that is the right way to say something that you really feel. So the most beautiful thing can’t be seen. You can only feel it.

Gerund

It is worth doing something.

“The Haghpat Monastic Complex is in Lori.”

Is it worth visiting?

“Yes, it is worth visiting. It is one of the most beautiful monasteries in Armenia.”

“If you want to change the world start off by making your bed”

I have heard this phrase many times with different interpretations. But now it’s my turn to explain my viewpoint about it. If I am asked to explain that sentence, I will say this way: If you want to become an important person or to do big things you must start making little steps to your goal. I have very important rules in my life. Good things aren’t given easily so I must struggle to achieve my aim. I think, first of all, this must be fixed in our mind. If you do like that, you will value what you have achieved with difficulty. Yes there are “sharks” in our way which are associated with our problems but they should not disturb you. You should struggle to overcome these problems and get to your destination. And in the end, you can see that you have already become a very important person at least for yourself by making these small steps.
