The sculptor of the statue is Yervand Kochar. The statue was erected in 1959. It is in the square just outside the railway station. During the Soviet times, most of the tourists visited Armenia by train, and the first thing that the tourists were attracted by was the statue to Davit of Sassoun. It is magnificent: a giant horseman with huge muscles, a severe look holding a huge sword in the way one holds a big broom or a scythe. The horseman doesn’t seem to be going to kill one man. He seems to be going to sweep away a huge amount of rubbish with a huge broom or mow ripe hay with a huge scythe. The horseman is Davit of Sassoun, the Armenian epic hero who according to the Armenian epic Daredevils of Sassoun, drove Arab invaders out of Armenia. There is a bowl on the rock with water flowing out of it. Yervand Kochar’s idea was to show that Armenians are very patient to an extent but when the bowl of patience is full, Armenians can rebel. And the scythe-like sword is also symbolic denoting that Armenians are not killers, they only sweep away the intruders. This is a genius piece of work.
Արձանի քանդակագործը Երվանդ Քոչարն է: Արձանը տեղադրվել է 1959 թվականին: Այն գտնվում է երկաթուղային կայարանի հարևանությամբ գտնվող հրապարակում: Խորհրդային տարիներին զբոսաշրջիկների մեծ մասը գնացքով էին այցելում Հայաստան, և առաջին բանը, որ գրավում էր զբոսաշրջիկներին՝ Սասունցի Դավիթ արձանն էր: Դա շքեղ է. Հսկայական մկաններ ունեցող հսկա հեծյալը, հսկայական սուրը պահող դաժան տեսքը այնպես,ի հսկա թուր բռնած այնպես, ինչպես մարդիկ մեծ ցախավելը կամ գերանդին են բռնում: Ձիավորը կարծես թե չի պատրաստվում մեկ մարդու սպանել: Թվում է, որ նա պատրաստվում է սրբել մաքրել մեծ քանակի աղբ մի հսկայական ցախավելով, կամ էլ՝ հնձելու է հասունացած խոտը մի հսկայական գերանդիով: Ձիավորը Սասունցի Դավիթն է, հայ էպիկական հերոսը, որը, ըստ հայկական էպոսի, արաբ զավթիչներին դուրս մղեց Հայաստանի տարածքից: Ժայռի վրա կա մի թաս, որից ջուր է հոսում: Երվանդ Քոչարի գաղափարը այն էր, որ ցույց տա, որ հայերը չափից շատ համբերատար են, բայց երբ համբերության բաժակը լցված լինի, հայերը կարող են ապստամբել: Եվ գերանդու նման սուրը նաև խորհրդանշական է, որ հայերը մարդասպան չեն, նրանք միայն սրբում դուրս են քշում ներխուժողներին։ Սա հանճարեղ աշխատանք է:
