Saint Gayane Church is located in Echmiadzin not far from the Mother Cathedral. According to Armenian historian Agatangeghos, Gayane and Hripsime were nuns in Rome and were living in the nunnery of Saint Pole. Gayane was an abbess. Gayane and Hripsime were being persecuted by the Roman Emperor Diocletian. So they ran away from Rome and came to Armenia. They settled near the town of Vagharshapat (now it is called Echmiadzin).
Armenian king Tiridates III was admired by the beauty of Hripsime and he proposed her to marry him. Hripsime refused to do so, and Tiridates ordered Hripsime, Gayane and all their virgin friends to be killed. In 301 Christianity was adopted in Armenia, and Grigor the Enlightener built a wooden chapel in the place where Gayane was killed. Later Gayane and Hripsime were made saints of the Armenian Apostolic Church. In the 7th century (630) a church was built in the place of the chapel by the order of Catholicos Ezra, and it was called Saint Gayane Church.
Սուրբ գայանե եկեղեցին գտնվում է Էջմիածնում՝ ոչ հեռու Մայր տաճարից: Ըստ հայ պատմիչ Ագաթանգեղոսի Գայանեն և Հռիփսիմեն կույսեր էին Հռոմում և ապրում էին Սուրբ Պողոս կուսանոցում: Գայանեն կույսերի մայրապետն էր: Գայանեն և Հռիփսիմեն հալածվում էին Հռոմի կայսր Դիոկղետանիոսի կողմից: Այսպիսով նրանք փախան Հռոմից և եկան Հայաստան: Նրանք հաստատվեցին Վաղարշապատ (այժմ՝ Էջմիածին) քաղաքի մոտ: Հայոց արքա Տրդատ Երրորդը հիացած էր Հռիփսիմեի գեղեցկությամբ և առաջարկեց նրան ամուսնանալ իր հետ: Հռիփսիմեն հրաժարվեց անել դա, և Տրդատը հրամայեց մահապատժի ենթարկել Հռիփսիմեին, Գայանեին և բոլոր նրանց կույս ընկերուհիներին: 301 թվականին Քրիստոնեությունը ընդունվեց Հայաստանում և Գրիգոր Լուսավորիչը մի փայտաշեն մատուռ կառուցեց այն վայրում, որտեղ սպանվել էր Գայանեն: Հետագայում Գայանեն և Հռիփսիմեն Հայ Առաքելական եկեղեցու սրբեր դասվեցին: 7-րդ դարում (630թ.) Կաթողիկոս Եզրի հրամանով մի եկեղեցի կառուցվեց մատուռի տեղում և այն անվանվեց Սուրբ Գայանե եկեղեցի:
